Gatherings & Workshops

I have led many gatherings and workshops over the decades — many of them ceremonies based on visions I received directly from Spirit. Although I no longer travel months each year to different places in order to hold large gatherings and other events, some are still being held today by my students.

Pipe Carriers' Dance

Based on visions I received in the late 1990s, the Pipe Carriers' Dance helps pipe carriers renew their commitment to carry their pipes for their communities and for the planet for another year. In perfect reciprocity, it also gives non-pipe-carrying community members the opportunity to support the pipe carriers who support them while benefiting from the magic and healing. This ceremonial dance begins at sunset.

Black Lodge

The Black Lodge is a physical manifestation of a vision I brought forth in 1994. It is a black teepee painted with white moons, stars, and symbols of wind, water, and lightning. The Black Lodge holds lost altars from feminine traditions, including Snake and Deer. Black is a sacred color that represents the night sky as well as the West in many Native traditions. The Black Lodge is a place of ceremony, rebirth, and healing. She is also an interdimensional doorway.

The physical lodge is quite old and has an interesting story. It was the lodge of the arrow maker in the movie Dances with Wolves. The owner fell on hard times and had to sell the teepee, which was purchased by a Boy Scout troop and used for many years. When they put her up for sale, I rescued her. She was deep in the woods, dirty, and unloved. I painted her skirt as you see her today. Over the decades, hundreds of people have experienced her and the medicine she brings. I’m truly blessed to have her be a part of my medicine path.

Earth Dance

The Earth Dance is another ceremony that resulted from visions I received around 1989.  These shamanic gatherings bring people together to drum, dance, pray, and seek a vision about what they can do to help heal Mother Earth and the type of dance they will commit to practice for her for the following year. The Earth Dance works through the energy of the four elements (earth, water, fire, and air) and awakens our souls, reconnects us with the sacred web of life, teaches us the wisdom of living from the heart and knowing who we are, and helps ensure we each make positive and unique contributions to life. Each Earth Dance features pipe ceremonies, sweat lodges, and much more.

Medicine Wheel Gatherings

For several decades, the Bear Tribe held Medicine Wheel Gatherings to honor Sun Bear’s vision and to celebrate the wisdom that our mineral, plant, and animal allies had to teach humankind. Each gathering featured an opening ceremony with 36 people in costumes who danced as participants sang songs to honor the wisdom of the animals, plants, and minerals aligned with the 36 stones that made up the medicine wheel. Gatherings also featured pipe ceremonies, sweat lodges, and teachings by Native and non-Native elders.

Women's Gatherings

For many decades, I participated in and led Women's Gatherings that drew together women of like heart and mind regardless of race or ethnic origin, age, sexual orientation, appearance, or size. Such gatherings provided women with a safe space to be heard and to share their experiences on the feminine journey amongst a loving community that valued them just as they were. Whether we met once or twice a year or every two weeks to honor the new and full moons, these gatherings were always powerful, heartfelt, and often life-transforming. We often celebrated the feminine mysteries of menarche, pregnancy and childbirth, and menopause.

Medicine Tool Workshops

Over the decades, I’ve taught many workshops where students learned to make and decorate their own medicine tools — including drums, rattles, spirit shields, medicine dolls, ceremonial garments, wands, and staffs — and then empower the tools. For the most important tools, such as drums, rattles, pipes, and shields, a ceremony is conducted to awaken each tool (encourage a spirit to enter the tool and agree to work with us), then consecrate and bind the tool and spirit to the student who made it.
